"Otets Paisiy - 1926 " Community Center

The thirst for creativity and the striving for enlightenment and culture constitute the magic that intoxicates the spirit and turns dreams into reality. The *chitalishte* (community center) in Staroselo (present-day Nikolovo) opened in 1926 and was named after the enlightener who paved the way for our National Revival—Father Paisius. The inaugural meeting held on December 4, 1926, elected the center's board of trustees: Iliya Georgiev, Toncho Dzhabrailov, Zapryan Zhelev, Todor Yanev, Zlatka Kacharova, and Yanyu Mitakov. Following its establishment, the forward-thinking people of Nikolovo decided to build a community hall with an auditorium—the most modern of its time. In 1930, the theatre season was inaugurated with classic plays such as The Daughter-in-Law, Kalin the Eagle, Boryana, and others. The community centre's amateur theatre troupe also took part in national amateur theatre festivals, and in 1935 it welcomed the visiting Haskovo Municipal Theatre to perform on its stage. Our white community centre, every book within you is a window to the sun, every word you hold is a golden grain. Our village had its own distinguished speaker—the teacher Nikola Arnaudov, who delivered lectures and presentations, inspiring the enlightened young people of the community. Alongside its theatrical and educational activities, the community centre also laid the foundations of amateur folk dance. The year was 1950, when the first dance ensemble was formed. Only a few years later, in 1957, construction began on the new modern building of the community centre, thanks to the efforts of the then mayor, Decho Petrov. Despite the challenges and changes brought by time, this temple of spirituality has continued to keep the flame of knowledge alive, enriching the cultural and spiritual life of the community while preserving and promoting Bulgarian customs and traditions. Here, the windows are the last in the village to go dark; the songs gently bid the day goodnight. The stars remain awake, accompanying all evening long the ripened fields, resonating with the ringing song of the golden wheat. The village's rich folk song tradition has been preserved through the establishment of choral ensembles, including a traditional women's choir of 32 cooperative farm workers and a youth traditional folk choir.
